Mahjong in Boston — FAQ
Where can I play mahjong in Boston?
Chinatown community organizations run Hong Kong Mahjong games. American Mahjong clubs gather at synagogues, JCCs, and senior centers in Brookline, Newton, and the western suburbs. Some Cambridge cafés host casual game nights.
Are there college mahjong groups in Boston?
Yes — several Boston-area universities have student mahjong groups that run public events open to non-students. Check the events list for university-hosted sessions, especially during the school year.
What style is more common in Boston?
Hong Kong Mahjong dominates in Chinatown and immigrant-community settings; American Mahjong is more common in suburban clubs and senior centers. Both have steady weekly games — the choice usually comes down to which neighborhood is closer.
