Mahjong in San Francisco — FAQ
Where can I play mahjong in San Francisco?
You can play mahjong in San Francisco at Hong Kong Mahjong games in Chinatown, the Richmond, and the Sunset, plus American Mahjong community games.
What's the difference between SF and Bay Area events?
San Francisco events are inside the city limits; Bay Area events cover the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley), Peninsula (San Mateo, Palo Alto), and South Bay (San Jose, Cupertino). Many regulars travel between both calendars — check the Bay Area page for nearby options.
Are there beginner mahjong sessions in SF?
Yes — community centers in Chinatown and Richmond District occasionally run introductory Hong Kong Mahjong sessions, and a handful of cafés and bookshops in the Mission and SoMa have hosted beginner nights. Filter for "Lesson" or "Workshop" events.
